Originally from New Jersey, Matthew was introduced to the kirtan tradition of Bhakti Yoga in 2012 and co-created his first kirtan band in 2013. Moving to Nevada City, California in the Spring of 2014, Matthew lived and worked at a Bhakti influenced meditation retreat where he lead kirtan before silent group meditations daily for over a year. Matthew now lives in San Diego where he feels called to gather hearts and share his devotion.
With roots in the Vedic anukirtana tradition, a kirtan is a call-and-response style song or chant, set to music, wherein multiple singers recite or describe a legend, or express loving devotion to a deity, or discuss spiritual ideas. It may include dancing or direct expression of bhavas (emotive states) by the singer. Many kirtan performances are structured to engage the audience where they either repeat the chant, or reply to the call of the singer.
See you all Friday!
